Sex And The City
Style: Romantic Comedy
My Rating: 4/5
Plot
This television show turned into a movie pretty much takes off where the television series ended. Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) is still with Mr. Big and they are in search of a new apartment, which begins to lead them down the path of the idea of marriage. Samantha (Kim Cattrall) and her boyfriend, Smith Jerrod, appear to be going steady but the idea of being tied down mixed with the new hot neighbour has Samantha’s head spinning. Charlotte (Kristin Davis) is as happy as ever with her husband and adopted daughter, but the thought of another addition to the family is up in the air. Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) is on the verge of a breakdown as she is torn between her son, husband, and job, all while living in Brooklyn. There is of course, the much expected, over the top clothes, accessories, and shoes. In typical Sex And The City style, everything leads to tough conflicts and crossroads that the four women must face both together and alone. Sex And The City is full of glitz and glamour, as well as tears, smiles, and downright hilarious moments.
Acting
I would say that these characters could potentially be realistic in the sense that they all have very good jobs (and/or significant others who have good jobs) therefore being able to afford all their fashions. It is also very believable that there could be four women who depend on each other greatly and who have been through a ton together. The only thing that is not so realistic is the fact that someone in today’s society could wear some of those outrageous clothes on a day-to-day basis.
I think that in some ways the main characters are stereotypes but in others not as much. I think that the fact that there are four women who are great friends and who all have very different personalities is a little bit stereotypical. However, the fact that they all have great jobs and are insanely into fashion isn’t as much of a stereotype as you usually think of people very into fashion and shopping as dumb rich girls who use their Daddy’s credit card 24/7.
The characters are really well developed. At the beginning of the movie the characters are a little flat but as the movie takes off they all reveal sides of themselves you never thought that you would get to see. Every character has something deeper than what is seen on the surface.
All of the main actors were completely believable and acted their part perfectly. They really committed to their roles and definitely did not let down in the acting. However, some actors playing minor roles acted well, but they didn’t completely sell me on their characters.
Special Effects, Cinematography, Music Score, Camera Shots, Editing, Etc.
Sex And The City does not really have very many special effects except for maybe some scenery and background scenes. However, that contributed a ton to the feel of the atmosphere of the movie. There was a great variety of both camera shots and angles that each fit perfectly with the mood of the scene. The cinematography was great and the editing perfectly meshed with each scene. Also, a great variety of music was used because there were so many different moods portrayed throughout the movie. All of the technical aspects really enhanced the movie and made it the best it could be.
In my opinion, the music really stood out. In every single scene, it set the mood and the timing of it was impeccable. The music kept me quite engaged throughout the movie.
Final Comments
I think that Sex And The City is definitely directed more towards women. I can’t really see very many men enjoying this movie and most who watched it were most likely forced by their girlfriends or wives. This movie would be most enjoyed by mothers and daughters or a few friends getting together. Devoted Sex And The City fans would definitely love this movie. With that being said, you also did not have to have watched the television series to thoroughly enjoy the film. However, this movie is not really suitable for younger audiences.
This movie had many strengths and weaknesses. It really captivates its audiences and has a story any woman could relate too. The acting is fabulous as well as the technical aspects. It is full of fun and sadness, and at times you don’t ever want it to end. However, it is two hours and forty-five minutes long and at times it just gets dragged out. Also, at times it gets a little predictable. All in all though, I’d say there are more strengths than weaknesses.
I would personally recommend this film. It is loads of fun and will have you laughing hysterically as well as tearing up. It is a really good addition to the television series.
